A massive rally was organised in Manipur by the United Committee Manipur (UCM) on Wednesday to demand protection of the State’s integrity and unity and not upset the cordial coexistence of all communities. However, the United Naga Council, which does not take kindly to campaigns by other communities against the ongoing search for peace, called a 12-hour general strike in the “Naga-populated areas” of Manipur. They were demanding an immediate solution to the Naga problems.
Police sources said that normal life in the Naga dominated areas was disrupted. Director General of Police L.M. Khaute, said that there was no untoward incident in the State either during the rally or the strike. Sunil Karam, president of the UCM, said, “The rally is not directed against any community. We have been living in peace and harmony for over 2,000 years. We shall fight jointly if any attempt is made to balkanise the people”.

A large number of people assembled at Trau ground near Imphal and took out a long march to Khuman Lampak sports complex, where a public meeting was held. The meeting called for people to fight any government attempt to drive wedges among them. For the first time, Muslims in the State openly opposed all moves to divide Manipuris.
“We support the demand of UCM and will live in peace and harmony. All attempts to divide us should be dropped,” said some speakers in the meeting. Though schools and colleges remained open, students were in the rally, shouting slogans to protect Manipur. Resolutions of the meeting on integrity, unity and peaceful coexistence shall be communicated to the Union government, the organisers said.
